What to Expect at Your First Alteration Appointment in Valley Village
October 10, 2026

First time at a tailor? You are not alone
Most people have never had a garment professionally altered until they need a wedding dress taken in or a suit jacket shortened. If that sounds like you, here is exactly what your first visit will look like.
Before you come in
- Wear the right shoes. Hemming depends on the heel height you actually wear with the garment.
- Bring the undergarments you plan to wear. A bra with the gown, a suit shirt with the suit — it changes the fit.
- Wash and press the garment. Tailors charge extra for stained or wrinkled pieces, and the alterations will not sit right on dirty fabric.
The fitting itself (15–20 minutes)
Your tailor will:
- Pin the garment on your body while you stand naturally
- Mark the new hem, seam, or dart locations
- Discuss what is realistic — some things can be altered, some cannot
- Confirm the turnaround time and price
You will be standing in front of a mirror. Breathe normally. The fit you see while holding your stomach in is not the fit you will live in.
Common alterations and rough timelines
Typical turnaround for everyday work:
- Hem pants or a skirt: 3–5 business days
- Take in or let out a dress: 5–7 business days
- Suit jacket sleeve length: 5–7 business days
- Bridal gown alterations: 2–4 weeks total, usually across 2–3 fittings
Rush turnaround is often available for an extra fee.
What can and cannot be altered
Usually possible: hem, taking in seams, sleeve length, dart placement, simple waistband work.
Hard or impossible: letting out a seam that has no seam allowance, shortening a beaded hem without re-beading, restyling a garment into a different silhouette.
A good tailor will tell you up front if the alteration you want is realistic.
Pricing
Alterations are usually priced by the job, not by the hour. Before work begins, confirm:
- The price per item
- Rush fees if you need it sooner
- The cost of any unexpected findings (broken zippers, torn linings)
