How Much Do Clothing Alterations Cost in Los Angeles?
October 17, 2026

Alterations are priced by the job, not the hour
Most tailors in Los Angeles quote a flat price per alteration. The price depends on the garment, the fabric, the complexity, and the turnaround time.
This guide gives you the realistic ranges for the most common alterations in the LA area.
Hemming
- Pants hem (standard, original hem preserved): 0–5
- Pants hem (cuff, jeans, or taper): 5–5
- Skirt hem: 5–0
- Dress hem (simple): 5–5
- Wedding gown hem: 0–00+ (heavily beaded or layered gowns cost more)
Pants hemming assumes a straight, clean cut. If you need the original hem preserved on jeans or dress pants, the work is more careful and costs more.
Taking in / letting out
- Dress side seams: 0–0
- Pants waist (letting out): 5–5 (depends on how much seam allowance is available)
- Pants waist (taking in): 0–0
- Suit jacket side seams: 0–20
- Suit jacket shoulders: 0–80 (one of the harder alterations)
Letting out a seam is impossible if there is no seam allowance left. A good tailor will tell you this up front before charging you.
Sleeves
- Suit jacket sleeve length: 0–0
- Shirt sleeve length: 5–5
- Dress sleeve length: 5–0
- Adding or removing sleeve cuffs: 0–0
Sleeve alterations are unforgiving — half an inch off and the jacket no longer sits right. Worth using an experienced tailor.
Suiting alterations
A full suit alteration (jacket + pants) typically runs 50–50 if everything needs adjustment. The most common package includes:
- Jacket sleeve length
- Jacket side seam
- Pants hem
- Pants waist (taking in)
Suit alterations are usually quoted as a flat package price.
Bridal alterations
This is its own category because of the time and fitting complexity. Typical ranges:
- Standard bridal gown alterations: 00–00
- Complex bridal gowns (multiple layers, beading, structure): 00–,500+
- Custom bustle addition: 5–00
- Veil hem or cut: 0–5
Bridal alterations usually happen across 2–3 fittings over 4–8 weeks. The total price reflects the time and care, not just the labor.
What affects the price
- Fabric. Silk, chiffon, and beaded fabrics take longer than cotton or polyester.
- Lining has to be removed and reattached. This adds time and cost to most fitted alterations.
- Hand work vs. machine. Hand-finished hems and buttonholes are more expensive.
- Rush turnaround. 24-hour or 48-hour rush usually adds 30–100% to the price.
- Existing construction quality. Well-made garments are easier to alter than poorly made ones.
When the price should make you pause
A price that is much lower than the ranges above usually means:
- The tailor is cutting corners (skipping pressing, using temporary stitching)
- The work will not be done by the person you talked to
- The garment will not be re-checked on you
A price that is much higher usually means:
- You are paying for an in-house specialist (worth it for bridal or designer suiting)
- The job involves structural work, not just a simple adjustment
What to ask before agreeing
- Is the quote flat or hourly?
- What is the turnaround time?
- Is pressing included?
- If I bring in a similar garment, will the price be the same?
- What happens if the fit is off when I pick it up?
A reliable tailor answers all of these without hesitation.
